How to Get Rid of Lint From New Towels

This easy step by step guide shows how to stop towel lint and shedding to prevent the fine particles of fabric from new towels sticking to your skin and covering your bathroom.

In recent years manufacturers of towelling have changed their processes to cut costs. This results in cheaper towels but it also means the towels will start to shed fabric as soon as they are washed.

Even company's who claim to have 5-year warranties on their towels will shed lint everywhere. It can be exasperating but there is a method which will greatly reduce the lint and stop the towels from shedding. This will also help to lock the color in the towels and prevent fading.

Baking Soda Vs Vinegar

Everyone writing on this issue will tell you to wash the towels in hot water however some will swear by using baking soda in the wash cycle. Personally, I don't like the idea of putting baking soda through the washing machine as it could clog up the filters if it isn't dissolved properly.

Baking Soda

If you would like to try this method fill a large laundry sink with hot water then dissolve half a cup of baking soda in the water. Place the towels in the sink then agitate for a minute.

Leave the towels to soak for half an hour then rinse well. Place the towels in the washing machine with laundry powder as usual then wash on a hot water cycle.

Vinegar

My personal preference is white vinegar as it works and it cleans the machine at the same time! As I only have the cold water hooked up to my machine to save on energy, I soaked the towels in hot water and vinegar in a laundry sink for 30 minutes then put the towels through a normal cycle in the machine.

  1. Soak the Towels

Let your machine fill with hot water. Add 1 cup of white vinegar then mix through. Submerge the towels then leave for 30 minutes to soak.

  2. Wash

Add laundry detergent to your machine then continue the wash cycle with hot water.

  3. Remove Excess Lint and Shedding

After the towels are dry, they may have some lint or shedding leftover from the initial wash. Use a lint brush to remove the excess shedding and lint. The towels are now ready to use.  This step can be done first before soaking.

Tip

You should only have to soak the towels in vinegar and hot water once. If the lint and shedding persist try repeating the process with 2 cups of vinegar or try soaking in hot water and half a cup of baking soda. Make sure the baking soda is washed out before placing in the machine.
